Doctoral studies
A doctoral programme consists of a thesis and of courses and other meriting activities that comprises 60 credits.
Compulsory courses
At the Joint Faculties of Humanities and Theology the following courses are compulsory for all doctoral students:
- Introductory course, comprising 5 credits
- Research Ethics, comprising 3 credits
- Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, comprising 3 credits.

About the course
The Introductory Course for Post-Graduate Students is given every year for new doctoral students on a part-time basis during the autumn semester. The language of instruction is English.
Schedule
In autumn 2024, the Introductory Course is given at 9 am – 4 pm on the following dates:
- 16–17th September
- 23–24th September
- 7–8th October
- 21–22nd October.

Registration
All newly admitted doctoral students are automatically registered for the course. If for some reason you were unable to take the course when neginning your doctoral studies in a previous semester, please contact Marina Hansson.

About the course
This is an intensive two-week course that requires full-time studies. The course is offered once every semester: during weeks during weeks 46–47 (11th–22nd November) in the autumn 2024, and during weeks 19–20 (5th–16th May) in the spring 2025. The language of instruction is English.

- 14 November at 9:00–14:00
- 15 November at 9:00–12:00

About the course
The compulsory higher education pedagogic course is called Introduction to Teaching and Learning in Higher Education and is offered by the Division for Higher Education Development (AHU). The course is given in both Swedish and English. The English version of the course can be taken either as an online course or a blended course.

Registration
Registration is done directly via AHU's website. The courses offered and registration forms are available on the website when the application period is open: https://www.ahu.lu.se/en/.
To register for the course, you need approval from your supervisor, and the course must be included in your individual study plan. After completing the course, you will receive a course certificate from AHU that you show to the responsible administrator at the department, who registeres the results in Ladok, and then the supervisor can certify.

About the course
In the spring semester of 2025, the Centre for Theology and Religious Studies offer the third-cycle course “What is Religion? The History of the Scientific Study of Religion”, in which you are given the opportunity to explore the origin of the concept of religion and how it has been developed and used in different contexts from antiquity to the present day. The course focuses on the historical development of the concept of religion, its role in late modernity, and its dissemination to different cultures around the world.
