Published: 27 June 2019 About: In 2018, the Faculty of Humanities at Lund University decided to award the American historian Timothy Snyder an honorary doctorate. He received his degree at the doctoral conferment ceremony in Lund in May of 2019.
Timothy Snyder is a professor of history at Yale University. He was given his honorary doctorate for his outstanding contributions to the research field of European history and for his significant commitment to international research and public debate. Professor Snyder is one of the most well-known and influential historians of our time and one of the world’s leading experts in his field, contemporary history of Central and Eastern Europe. With an impressive list of published books and a significant number of academic articles and book chapters to his name, Snyder has made an exceptional contribution to modern historiography. In addition to his authorship and research achievements, Snyder is known as a skilled debater and public intellectual whose work often reach far beyond the traditional academic sphere. His most recent books are On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century (2017) and The Road to Unfreedom: Russia, Europe, America (2018).
