Kurs 7,5 högskolepoäng • COSM32
Have you ever wondered why economic differences in Asia are so striking? Why is extreme poverty next to immense wealth? Why does subsistence farming persist in the shadows of hyper modern city skylines? In this course you may find some answers. You will learn how supply chains transform the global economy and shape the landscape of economic development. We will apply spatial concepts and tools in order to understand emerging patterns of economic integration and disintegration in Asia.
In the course we start by introducing theoretical arguments concerning economic geography and development and then apply them to case studies in East and South-East Asia.
This is followed by specialised study of theories and concepts that explain national and global economic circumstances focusing on global supply chains. In the course we systematically analyse the global organisation of production with regard to five different fields: financial markets, trade, industrial relations, multinational companies and innovation.
The aim of the course is to provide you with an understanding of the impact of the factors, processes and consequences of globally organised production on individuals and nations in East and South-East Asia. In the course we will discuss economic theories from an interdisciplinary perspective to promote a critical understanding.
