Salary increases

Doctoral studies

The entry salary is the same for all doctoral students with a doctoral employment at the HT Faculties. The salary is reviewed regularly, usually once a year. In addition to the regular salary increase, a so-called salary increase in stages (etapphöjning) is also applied, which means that the salary is increased further when the doctoral student has completed specific parts of their education.

Salary review (RALS)

As an employer bound by collective agreements, Lund University has an obligation to conduct recurrent salary reviews, also for doctoral students with a doctoral employment at the university. In addition to this, doctoral students' salary increase is handled according to the principles of local agreements on salary setting for doctoral students.

Salary increase in stages

Doctoral students with a doctoral employment are granted a salary increase, a so-called salary increase in stages (etapphöjning), in accordance with the HT Faculties' criteria.

Read more in Regulations for third-cycle education at the Faculties of Humanities and Theology.

For doctoral students starting their education no later than 31st July 2023, the following applies:

Salary increases in stages are granted after 120 and 180 credits have been achieved (that is, 50 % and 75 % respectively of the entire doctoral education up to the doctoral degree). The application for salary increase in stages is made by the doctoral student on a special form (see the box on the right) and sent to the Faculty Secretary for doctoral education for a decision.

Each respective stage means a salary increase of SEK 1,400.

For doctoral students starting their education from 1st August 2023, the following applies:

Salary increases in stages are granted after the doctoral student has completed 45 credits of the course work for the doctoral degree, and after the doctoral student has completed half of the thesis project and presented this at the compulsory midway seminar. The two stages do not have to come in a certain order.

The doctoral student's supervisor is responsible for registering in the doctoral student's individual study plan (ISP) when the respective criterion for salary increase in stages is met. The doctoral student does not need to apply to receive salary increases in stages.

The stage after the doctoral student has completed 45 credits of course work means a salary increase of SEK 1,200. The stage after the doctoral student has completed half of the thesis project and presented this at the compulsory midway seminar means a salary increase of SEK 2,300.
