Course 15 credits • YIDC11
This course gives you an introduction to Jewish history in Eastern and Central Europe from the 19th century to the present day.
You will study important events and ideas in modern Jewish history from critical perspectives and within a broader historical context.
In the first module, we focus on the social, cultural, religious, and political life of Jews in Eastern and Central Europe. Here, you will particularly learn about gender, secularization, and nationalism.
The second module deals with migration routes beyond Eastern and Central Europe, focusing on Sweden and the Nordic countries, but also the USA, Palestine/Israel, and Argentina. You will also reflect on the causes of mass immigration, such as antisemitism, violence, and poverty.
