Course
Course 15 credits • LIVR43
The students are expected to read a total of seven novels from early and mid-Victorian England which have been selected so as to represent various key genres of the novel. They then analyse individual works on their own premises and in doing so obtain a collective picture of the development of the 19th century novel.
The rise of the mass reading audience on which this development rested is also discussed.
Parallel to the literary works, students read scholarly material relating to the genre of the novel. Articles are selected to provide knowledge on the literary texts, to develop the ability to work with literary concepts and to train the student in distinguishing between various scholarly approaches and approaches to literary criticism over an extended period of time.
The course is an optional course in the Master of Arts programme in Literature – Culture – Media. It is also offered as a single course.
