Course
Course 7.5 credits • LINN24
This is an advanced course in semantics, presupposing familiarity of basic concepts and theories, such as those covered by textbooks such as Saeed’s Semantics and Riemer’s Introducing semantics. Adopting a cognitive-functional approach to linguistic meaning, the course will deal with central semantic issues such as (a) sentence and speaker meaning, (b) meanings and concepts, (c) lexical and grammatical meaning, (d) polysemy and generality. A number of different methodologies in the study of semantics, such as intuition-based analysis, the use of corpora, cross-linguistic comparison, field work and experimentation, will also be introduced.
