Do you want to learn more about the connection of research on second language acquisition, with a focus on French, and the teaching of French in the Swedish school context? Are you interested in questions on how we teach languages, what we should teach and why? If yes, this is the course for you. We read the research literature on language development in a second language, in this case French, and discuss practical aspects of language teaching in the classroom.
This course gives an in introduction to research on second language acquisition, with a focus on French, and to the teaching of French in the Swedish school context. We study language development in learners of French as a second/foreign language and different factors that influence the speed end the end-state of the acquisition process. When focusing on the teaching of French in school, we discuss the status of French as a modern language in the Swedish school context and we read the national program for modern languages and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The course combines theoretical and practical aspects of second language learning and teaching through a mix of lectures, group discussions and a school visit. The examination of the course is based on an oral presentation and a written, individual course paper.
