Course
Course 7.5 credits • ENGM21
This is a course that is mainly concerned with the analysis of word meanings and meaning relations. It explores the core issues and concepts in English lexical semantics, and locates the linguistic study of word meanings within the wider context of the study of signs and communication. The course also explores the relation between the semantics of words and other aspects of meaning, such as context-dependent (pragmatic) meaning.
The course begins with some basic questions about the meaning of words; what do words mean, what is meaning, and what types of meaning are there. We will also look at different approaches to (word) meaning and to doing (lexical) semantics. After this introductory part, we will move on to the meanings of sentences, and try to break them down into their component parts. Finally, we will consider various aspects of language in context.
