This course is obligatory for students in the master's programme in languages and linguistics specialising in English. It can also be an elective course for other students within the same programme.
Students who have finished the BA course in English (ENGK03) can also take this course as a fee-standing course.
The course can be an elective course within ENGX64 (English: Linguistic specialisation (91-120 credits)).
The contents of the course
This is a course where you study English grammar and how it is described in various standard grammars. This way you get a much better and deeper understanding of things you already know. You also learn things a bout grammar that you haven't really thought about before.
Moreover you get a chance to compare various standard grammars to see where they agree and where they have chosen to describe what appears to be the same phenomena differently.
Interesting questions to ask could involve the degree to which the standard grammars are influenced by certain theories or grammar, to what extent they relate their descriptions to naturally-occurring linguistic data and statistics, what their ambitions are, etc.
After the course
After this course you will know much more about the English language and its grammar. This will make it much easier for you to talk about English grammar, for instance in front of a class of pupils or students.
