In the course, a number of English-speaking texts from different popular literature genres on the theme of teaching and education are studied. The texts are read and discussed based on narrative and genre perspective focusing especially on how teacher roles, educational issues and teaching situations are presented in anglophone popular fiction from the 19th century to the present day.
The course gives students training in reading and understanding of English-speaking texts and the opportunity to train their ability to express themselves in speech and writing in English. The course also gives the student training in reflecting on their own reading. The course is based on active participation, discussion, and reflection. The teaching consists of seven scheduled teaching sessions consisting of lecture components, teacher-supervised discussions, and group discussions. As a part of their learning, students write short texts during the course, on which they obtain formative feedback; they also carry out a group assignment in the form of recording a podcast. The course is examined through participation in the lectures, through four to five written assignments (each approximately 500 words) and through an oral group assignment to produce a podcast.
