Course
Course 7.5 credits • CTRB58
Do you want to deepen your understanding of interreligious relations? Are you interested in how religion shapes society, and how religion in turn is shaped by politics and culture? Are you curious about Istanbul, a city where East meets West, Christianity meets Islam, and secular ideals meet religious tradition? Then the course “Interreligious Relations in Istanbul and Beyond” might be for you.
In this course, we study how Christianity and Islam have historically influenced state power, and how they influence contemporary politics. We examine the challenges faced by religious minorities and why interreligious relations lead to both conflict and co-operation. The interplay between religion and ethnicity, and the role of religion in challenging or reinforcing racism, are further themes explored.
With the opportunity for field studies in Istanbul, lectures and seminars in Lund, these perspectives are woven together. Not only will you gain an academic understanding of the dynamics of religion, but also a chance to experience how these issues take shape in a real, historically rich environment. It is a course that sharpens your eye for the world’s complex religious landscape!
