Languages are interwoven with our ways of thinking, our relations to other people, our individual and collective memory, our culture and social identity. Languages play a key role for societal functions such as broadcasting news and educating new generations as well as for so-called grand challenges, for example, intercultural interaction and learning. Understanding, explaining and possibly enhancing these areas and functions generally demand a multidisciplinary approach and since the late 20th century new branches of linguistics have emerged, for example, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics and neurolinguistics. Language is also targetted in other disciplines, such as philosophy of language, language pedagogy and narratology. Further, larger multidisciplinary research groups are much more common today than fifteen years ago.
We will take a closer look at the strengths and weaknesses with these multidisciplinary approaches with linguistics at the centre. What trends can be seen on a local, national and international level? Also, we will discuss a variety of complex problems and societal challenges where a multidisciplinary approach with linguistics in a key role has a potential.
