Introductory ideas in my forthcoming book ‘Framing - The Social Art of Influence
In this seminar, Mikael Klintman, professor at the sociology department in Lund, will introduce the background and basic propositions in his forthcoming book Framing: The Social Art of Influence (Feb 2025). The concept of framing is central to many disciplines, especially media and communication studies, but also to seemingly unrelated fields such as neuropsychology and cultural studies. Despite its broad scope, framing research is often fragmented, with each field adopting its own terminology and methods. Mikael criticises the typical approach to framing analysis as being overly descriptive. He argues that they often overlook the ancestral roots of why individuals and groups are susceptible to certain types of frames in particular social contexts, and fail to explain why some framings gain public resonance while others do not. Luckily, at least parts of these gaps can be addressed by taking an interdisciplinary view of framing as a dynamic process within social interactions. Discussion topics may include how framing shapes perceptions of reality, its influence on public opinion, and the challenges of studying its effects. The seminar will focus on ideas from the introduction and first chapter of the book, leaving the rest of the book for future discussion.
